Dr. Khalid Al-Sultan serves as the Rector of King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals, Dhahran, Saudi Arabia.  He was appointed to the post in 2002.  Previously he served as Deputy Minister for Educational Affairs, Ministry of Saudi Arabia.  Other positions at KFUPM include Dean of the College of Computer Science & Engineering from 1996 to 1998 and Chairman of the Systems Engineering Department from 1993 to 1996.

Dr. Al-Sultan has served on the Editorial Boards of several international journals, has published extensively in refereed journals, co-authored one book and four book chapters. He is a member of several international professional organizations and consultant for government and private industrial institutions. Dr. Al-Sultan serves on the Saudi Aramco Board of Directors, as a member. He is also a member of the International Advisory Council of King Abdullah University for Science & Technology and was a member of the KAUST Presidential Search Committee.

Dr Al-Sultan spearheaded a strategic planning study for the entire higher education system in the Kingdom on behalf of the Ministry of Higher Education.  As Rector, he has overseen the deployment of an Enterprise Resource Plan system to manage many administrative functions at KFUPM, and introduced e-learning technologies to improve the learning experience of students.

He earned a Ph.D. in Industrial and Operations Engineering and a M.S. in Applied Mathematics from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.  Prior to that, he obtained a M.S. in Systems Engineering, and a B.S. (with highest honors) in Systems Engineering, both from KFUPM.

He received the “Middle East CEO of the Year 2005” award.
