John Etchemendy serves as Provost of Stanford University. He has held the position since 2000.  Previous positions at Stanford have included Chairman of the Department of Philosophy from 1998 to 2000, Senior Associate Dean in the School of Humanities and Sciences from 1993 to 1997, and Director of the Center for the Study of Language and Information from 1990 to 1993.  He joined the Stanford faculty in 1983, and was on the Princeton faculty from 1981 to 1983.


Etchemendy is the author or co-author of five books and numerous articles in logic and the philosophy of logic, including The Concept of Logical Consequence, and, with the late Jon Barwise, Language, Proof and Logic and The Liar.  He and Barwise also developed several pieces of academic software.  In 1997 they were awarded the Educom Medal for contributions to the teaching of logic.


He earned his bachelor's and master's degrees at the University of Nevada, Reno, and his Ph.D. from Stanford University.  He is a member of the American Philosophical Association, on the governing council of the Association for Symbolic Logic, an editor of the Journal of Symbolic Logic, and on the editorial boards of Synthese and Philosophia Mathematica.
